Sesto Fiorentino
Sesto Fiorentino is a town in the Florence province of Tuscany region in central Italy. The population of the town is about 46,000 inhabitants.
The history of Sesto Fiorentino dates back to the Mesolitic era of 9,000 B.C., what makes it the oldest human settlement in this region. The first known people here were the Etruscans. They inhabited this area from the 7th century BC, but the town was created by the Romans. With the spread of Christianity in Tuscany in Sesto Fiorentino began to appear the first churches. In the early Middle Ages was built the most important church of the present town the Pieve of San Martino. During its history Sesto Fiorentino firstly was the property of the Archbishop of Florence and later it passed to the Florentine Republic.
In the 18th century in Italy appeared the Chinese porcelain. It was transported to the Veneto region, the Ligurian ports and also to the Florence as a whole and in Sesto Fiorentino itself. In 1735 Marquis Carlo Ginori founded one of the first porcelain plants in Europe, the Manifattura di Doccia located in Sesto. Now this brand company is still located in Sesto and is the largest porcelain manufacturer in Italy. In Sesto Fiorentino today there are over one hundred producers of pottery in. Here is also located a state school for teaching pottery called L'Istituto Statale d'Arte.
Sesto Fiorentino is also rich in culture traditions and historical monuments. The oldest attraction is the Pieve di San Martino that is known for almost 1000 years. There are also located Palazzo Pretorio of 1477 and Santa Maria a Quinto, which was allegedly founded in the 11th century and rebuilt in the 18th century. In Sesto Fiorentino are located villas of Guicciardini Corsi Salviati, Paolina, Villoresi and park of Villa Gamba built in English style in 1853.
